Umpire Trainees and Employment Opportunities
Melbourne Netball is well known for its unique and highly successful approach to Netball Umpire Development. Players are given an opportunity to apply for a 10 week trial period in a specially designed package. This well designed education is both innovative and modern and presented in two parts. It is visually entertaining and aids to build confidence and awareness quickly inside the trainee's mind.

While working with nationally qualified umpire trainer's for guidance on court, all game shifts hold structured objectives for a trial trainee. Umpiring is a unique job role and a life changing experience. We understand the shifts that occur within a player as they grow into an umpire. We know what type of support is needed and ensure that they are never on their own. A gentle and progressive psychology is integrated within this program to assist decision making under speed that produces superb results.

Short and effective workshops are provided to boost the confidence and clarify the details.

Here's how it works
A minimum of 4 years of netball playing experience is required as a base for a new trial trainee. These details will need to be supplied in the application form below. Three compulsory training meetings must be attended within a year. No charges are made for these meetings. No application is accepted if these dates can not be attended. These dates are supplied below.

  1. Wednesday 1st Sept 2010 7 - 10pm
  2. Wednesday 6th Oct 2010 7 - 10pm
  3. Wednesday 3rd Nov 2010 7 - 10pm

This full trial period covers Part One of 4 weeks online training consisting of 6 hours of theory/reading across this time. Part Two consists of 6 game shifts on court with a Netball Umpire Trainer covering 2 x 40 minute netball matches. This trial period incurs a fee from a trial trainee umpire of $50.00 covering the 10 week period. See details below for more.

Are you a beginner?
After we receive your online application

  1. If your application is successful you will have a personal phone interview.
  2. If you are a suitable candidate a $50.00 trial trainee fee is charged and paid online via this page below. This covers materials given to you for the trial including a Rule Book/Education Journal/Online Training
  3. We create an your online account/membership
  4. We send you an email confirming you're able to access the trial trainee page with log in details
  5. Trial Trainees commences 4 weeks online theory training that prepares them before they step onto the court with clarity and confidence (around 6 hours of reading)
  6. When theory weeks are completed the court training begins (no trainee is placed on court without the theory)
  7. Trainees experience their first game shift and then proceed to gain remaining 5 booked games shifts online while applying their theory on court each week
  8. Trial is completed and progress with trainees is assessed with the aim to continue towards a "Sports Rapport Quality Assurance Calling the Shots" Trade Mark Qualification.

What happens after the trial period is over
All training continues in monthly blocks. Every block is especially designed to aid the trainee's mind without overwhelming them with too much information. Every game shift has a structured purpose. These blocks cover a period of 6 months that is designed to work towards achieving a "Sports Rapport Calling the Shots Quality Assurance" Trade Mark Qualification. Once a trainee is in full control of a court they are paid $20.00 per game for a 40 minute game. This should happen between weeks 11-14 at the latest.
